A Newcomer Family’s Delights in Willowsford, A 3-Part Series
Part 3: Winter
By Mardeene Mitchell, New Resident, Author, Photojournalist, Mother, Live-in Grandmother
Enchanted with our new home here at the end of summer when we arrived, I didn’t think anything could match the beauty of the rolling green hills, meadows and leafed out forests that surrounded sparkling Willow Lake. Then, on Saturday December 9th our first snow began to fall. It snowed and snowed and snowed some more. So, of course we grabbed the sleds and headed up to Grassland Grove Park.\
Such a burst of excitement on our snowy day! By the second day, when the snow had totally melted, sadness set in. Are we to have only bleak, dreary colorless days now? It didn’t look pretty at all to me outside on this winter day, certainly not photogenic. However, I simply had to walk. From habit, I grabbed my Nikon D3100 and braved the freezing blustery day. Up close with a telephoto lens see what unexpected beauty she showed me on the land.
I stumbled upon a gem of a surprise partially hidden by the bare branches. Our resident Great Blue Heron still reigns through the winter on Willow Lake. How delightful. Could it be the same one we see in summer?
The colder months in our Willowsford home won’t be so bleak after all. Happy wintering, everyone!
